Commissioned by Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) in conjunction with the exhibition This is a Present from a Small Distant World, Judd Greenstein’s In Teaching Others We Teach Ourselves will feature violist Nadia Sirota along with a string quartet. Members of the Grammy Award-winning Phoenix Chorale will perform a selection of other works by Greenstein. The concert also will include an introduction by SMoCA Assistant Curator Claire Carter and commentary from Greenstein and Sirota.

Judd Greenstein is a Brooklyn-based composer of structurally complex, viscerally engaging works for varied instrumentation. A passionate advocate for the “indie classical” community in New York and beyond, Greenstein writes much of his work for the virtuosic ensembles and solo performers who make up that community and tailors it to their specific talents and abilities.

Hailed by The New York Times as “a bold new-music interpreter and the violist of choice among downtown ensembles these days,” Nadia Sirota is known for her unique interpretations of new scores and for commissioning and premiering works by some of the most talented composers of her generation.
