A major star of the classical music world known for her captivating stage presence and superb technique, Russian pianist Olga Kern won the gold medal at the prestigious 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where she became the first woman to achieve this distinction in more than 30 years. She returns to Scottsdale to celebrate the 25th anniversary season of the Virginia G. Piper Concert Series.

Program:

  • Beethoven: Variation on a Theme by Salieri
  • Schumann: Carnaval
  • Rachmaninoff: Three Preludes, Op. 32, No. 5 in G, No. 10 in b and No. 12 in g-sharp
  • Chopin: Three Études, Op. 25, No. 1 in A-flat (“Aeolian Harp”), No. 2 Presto in f and No. 10 Allegro con fuoco in b
  • Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsodies S. 244, No. 10 and No. 2 (with cadenza by Rachmaninoff)

The concert also features Keyboard in the Sky,™ a video projection above the stage that enables the audience to see the pianist’s hands moving across the keyboard in real time from any seat in the theater.
