About This Event

Since shooting to classical stardom as the Gold Medal winner at the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition (the first and, so far, only American ever to do so), Garrick Ohlsson has commanded an international career of the first order. Known for bold interpretations of Romantic repertoire, Ohlsson will perform a range of works for this recital, focusing on the music of Brahms.

A native of White Plains, New York, Ohlsson began his piano studies at age 8, and at 13 he entered The Juilliard School. He studied with many teachers, but the Chilean master Claudio Arrau had an especially pronounced influence on his style. In addition to a long and close association with the music of Chopin, Ohlsson has recorded the complete Beethoven sonatas, the entire set of Brahms variations and the complete sonatas of Scriabin. He has surveyed more than 80 concertos in his repertoire, performing them with orchestras throughout the world, from St. Petersburg to Sydney.
